“What did he say, Helmut?”
With his fist to his forehead, his elbow supported by the examination table where our son lay, my husband raised his free hand and groped for mine.
He turned and looked up at me, tears brimmed his eyes. He winced before he spoke and when he finally did, his voice sounded as if it belonged to someone else.
“Something’s wrong,” he whispered.
In the summer of 1984, Tracie Frank Mayer, a young black American woman, uproots herself from family, friends and life as she knows it when she marries a German man and moves to his country.
Though not understanding the language is unsettling enough, twelve days after her anxiously awaited child’s birth, her psychological balance tumbles fully into despair“There is no surgery to save him,” the doctors explain to her husband in German. “Let your baby die,” they say to her in broken English.
Their son, Marc is born with Heterotaxy Syndrome; essentially a two chambered heart rather than four, an extremely rare and fatal condition.
Battling her husband, the doctors who don’t believe Marc can survive, his innumerable infections as well as her own fears, she does her level best to hold on in the maelstrom while doing all she can to ensure that her son has a chance at life.
Tracie’s enthralling memoir is a remarkable tale of rebellion and resilience; an inspirational story of one woman’s fight for her child’s life and a testimony to the perseverance of the human spirit.
It will indeed give hope and encouragement to anyone facing any battle not of his or her own choosing.

Tracie Frank Mayer's writing is like the lady herself, eloquent, sassy, classy and bold. This story is so heartfelt, about her journey, an excellent read up until the end. I honestly felt her pain, on more of a personal level having grown up together. I had my tissues, but I was crying and giggling in a few part's from what her father, the later Gerald Frank had said. It is a test of faith, strength, anger, but through it all she shares her thought provoking and emotional book clearly with such clarity and integrity. This book should make it to the big screen. So many decisions had to be made, but with the support and love of her family and friend's, and God's Grace and what I like to call favor, it all worked out ok. She realized she was stronger than ever before, and I think everyone who ever feels tested with anything in life, but especially the illness of a child should read this book. Race, gender, ethnic religious backgrounds, it doesn't matter. This is a book for all. I am so proud and inspired by her story.Product details

Incompatible with NatureA Mother Story edition by Tracie Frank Mayer Professional Technical eBooks Reviews
I learned so much from this book. I was previously unaware of this heart defect. It does, indeed, seem incompatible with life. I could have stood up and cheered for this mother who would not give up and continued to seek all possible help for her child. It makes me hope that I would be equally persistent. An intense read with a wonderful end!
Having a son with a congenital heart defect, I thought the book would be full of medical references etc. Refreshingly not at all! This is a book about a mother's will to save her son. The storytelling is wonderful, weaving in Tracie's childhood with her journey to save her new baby. It flows and captivates so well. My favorite part....the wonderful photos of the family at the end of the book. Bravo!!
This is the true story of a couple from different countries, who spoke different languages, who then fell in love at first sight, courted, married, and created a family. This couple's love story quickly turns to tragedy when their son is diagnosed with a significant cardiac defect, so significant that a professor of cardiology advises that the baby be allowed to die. However, the baby does not die, and it is only because of his parents patience and perseverance, determination and dedication, the baby grows to become a man, who is now living his life as if he has never, ever, been sick.
The story is so compelling, I feel as though I am in the clinics and hospitals with the family, Through the gifted writing of Tracie, Mayer, I draw strength from her struggle and wisdom from her words. In addition to being a fabulous read with many "heartfelt" sayings, this book would also be an excellent choice for a medical school curriculum, for it would clearly help physicians in training develop empathy for their patients and families.
What i thought was amazing about this true life story was not only what an awesome mama bear Tracie was for her little cub, but how her life story seemed to have prepared her for the life she was about to live. After reading what her young adult life entailed with a regiment as a full time employee of a stern mans man of a father, and schooling, it would make most of our heads swim with being overwhelmed. I feel that stage in her life gave her the life skills to face any parents worst nightmare. The double checking, the total involvement in any and all processes she encountered and most of all having the sense to know her gut feelings were legitimate, made for a gripping weekend of reading. Many things made this a success story. The timing of medical breakthroughs, family involvement in research, love and support from that family and the drive love gives a parent to put everything else aside for just a glimmer of hope. Needless to say, this story has gone way beyond a glimmer. God has shined on this beautiful family.
I'd highly recommend this book, especially for any parent who is facing a difficult health issue with a child. We may not have the upbringing that Tracie did, but this story does prove that miracles do happen.
Bravo Tracie Frank Mayer.
THIS book! What a story of the strength of a mother. If you want to read a book about how love heals ALL, then this book is for you. Traci is a powerful Mama Bear--giving birth to a sick son in a country whose language she does not speak and a culture she does not understand--yet she never backs down or gives up hope. She fights for the rights of her son, her family, all the while never letting up on her faith. It is a serious, sad, maddening and laugh out loud enjoyable read. If I knew this woman, she would be my friend, you will want her as yours too. The funniest parts of the book are the moments when, because of the language barrier, she can't communicate with anyone, so she has conversations with herself. Oh, and the most maddening...well, you'll know them when you read them. You'll be cussing and yelling along with this mother. with Traci, with the woman you will soon want to call your friend, your sister, your tribe member.
“Incompatible with Nature” is a story of inspiration, perseverance, faith and the power of believing in your path and never accepting less than what may be possible. This incredible story of a mother’s love for her child and the profound bond between mother and son is beautifully written. Tracie Frank is a talented and dynamic storyteller. Though her son had tremendous medical obstacles to overcome, Ms. Frank endeavored to give her child as much normalcy as possible. The reader is immediately engaged with her passion, drive, and determination in navigating a complex health system in a foreign country and in her journey to find the right medical treatment for her son taking her from country to country. This compelling narrative about a mother’s fight to save her son’s life demonstrates the importance of doing your own due diligence and inquiry. There are so many inspirational aspects to this story and how the path you take can change the destiny of those you love. This great story also weaves memories of Ms. Frank's early life with her family in Seattle to her life in Germany. Tracie Frank’s story is a must read.
